Hale recently made headlines with a blog post called " No Boys Allowed: School Visits as a Woman Writer." I spoke with Hale about the well-rounded female characters that populate her book universes, but why, as she says in her blog, she never wants her stories to be seen as "girl" books. These girls are crackerjacks, and as Miri will come to find out, some are a bit more rough and tumble than the palace is used to. But if you haven't read these books, don't get the wrong idea about princesses. Hot on the heels of the anniversary, Hale returned to the Princess Academy universe with the third book of the series, The Forgotten Sisters, where the tables have turned and now Miri is tasked with training the next generation of potential princesses.

When a competition for the first dance with the prince is announced, the girls’ animosity towards each other becomes clearer. It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since Shannon Hale released her Newbery Honor-winning Princess Academy, starring the whip smart, determined princess-in-training Miri. None of them have the chance to enjoy as there are too many rules and too few opportunities to be free like they were used to. Miri, along with several other girls, are taken away from their families and put in this academy with a horrid tutor. After that, the prince will arrive and choose one of them to be his wife.

There, they will be tutored and taught the ways of the royal palace until their tutor deems them fit.

Any girl over the age of 12 and under the age of 18 will be sent to a Princess Academy. One day, people from the city, lowlanders, come to visit with a message from the king. She hangs out with her friends and enjoys her life. For her whole life, she has lived on the mountains with her friends and family, taking care of livestock without a care in the world. Many characters seemed to be placeholders in the beginning, but their importance became clearer as the story progressed. This book was great and I loved how the characters developed throughout the book.
